New Digital Camera!

My first digicam was given to me in early January 2003 by my roommates and friends at Boulder, CO as a parting gift. They all pitched in $50 each (Praneet, Abhu, Sanjay, Shweta and Aditya) which on a student budget is quite a lot of money to buy a $250 digicamera: the Olympus D-510Z. The camera was fantastic and my first digital camera. It would take me a few months to realize it's flaws: high battery consumption, long delay to take snaps and no viewing of images you had taken unless you closed the shutter...One thing it was and has been is reliable. This camera has survived 3 years now and I retired it to my parents when they visited the US this year. All the images posted on this blog have been taken with this sturdy Olympus. It also chronicled the entire 18 months that I spent with a band in India, the Blackbirds, and the photos have been uploaded here. I hope my parents keep using it for many years to come for this camera has survived long journeys, the inadvertent drops to the floor and even a brief dip in a puddle of mud.

It was time to move on though. The Olympus was lacking in several respects that were occasionally frustrating: I lost several good shots to the slowness of the camera to launch itself and take a photo and entire sets of photos were lost simply because the batteries died too quick. Things would've been a lot of better with the 2500 mAhr batteries I now have...back then I spent a lot of money on Duracells. Thank God for Nimh batteries.

I shopped around for cameras with clear requirements: under $200 (or close), atleast 4X optical zoom. The cameras nowadays come with more than sufficient megapixel values, so that was not a criterion. And finally, I wanted something as sturdy as my Olympus. Sharapova looks good holding a brand new Powershot S series camera, it looks a lot less glamorous with a cracked LCD screen in your hands. Canon got it right with Sharapova and their S-series: same slim build, great performance and fast reflexes. So far though, more Canon's have been showing up cracked from routine use than Sharapova's visits to her medic (I'm guessing).

Canon did seem to have a more rugged camera in the A series. Reviews seem to be pretty good with the only complaint being slightly poorer video quality which has never been a big reason for purchasing a digicamera for me in any case. Pricegrabber threw up a $170 deal on a brand new A520 and I bought it. It arrived today and is still in it's case, waiting at home for me to start putting it to use on all the travels to follow. I know it's not the best out there and I could've certainly moved up in optical zoom and afforded it too. I just think this will do nicely for Adi's and my purposes as of now. Photography is fascinating, but not something I think we are prepared to recognize as a passion just yet.

Watch this space for more pictures from the new A520!

Sharapova is a very good reason to buy a Canon camera. When u go for a new one or for another one, be sure to check out the Nikon Coolpix series ... small and compact in size as well as on ur wallet and capture natural colors like no other. I have the 2100 and 3200 models. The S-series ones are really sleek ... just like Sharapova (hehe).
